I’ve been working on another modular environment set, this time with a bit more planning. It’s taken longer than I imagined, mostly because I was worried about getting a consistent style, but now I’m realizing that’s something you work on as you go along.
I’ve only textured a few pieces so far, but I’m liking how it’s starting to come together. Grass needs some work, but at this point it’s all downhill. The good kind of downhill, where it’s easier, not the kind where everything starts to suck.
I’ve been a big fan of Kris Straub’s Broodhollow since I discovered it a month ago. Couldn’t resist doing some fanart of Wadsworth, especially since he seems to hate scary things as much as me (I hope I’m not that neurotic though).
I highly recommend the comic to any horror or comedy fans. I don’t really like being scared, but there’s a nice balance of unsettling creepy things in Broodhollow that I enjoy.
So, Global Game Jam. Went pretty much as expected; didn’t sleep much, almost made a game, went a little crazy, you know, the usual.
Since the theme was heartbeat and we didn’t want to do the inside of a body, we made a game about repairing the “veins” for a giant heart-tree thing in a forest. I ended up being the only artist on the team, which seemed fine in the beginning, but kind of killed our chances of finishing the game in the end.
Anyway, here’s some stuff!
The heart-tree-thing was pretty fun to model. Leaf texture definitely needs work… actually the whole thing does. Eventually the heart bit will be a bit more red looking to stand out.
And here’s the protagonist, Murmur. 615 polys for him and the staff. That’s a bit higher than I normally go, but then I wanted him to be able to animate without freaking out like the rest of my low poly dudes. Definitely adding more detail in the texture later, the whole chest/waist area is rather vague.
All is not lost, though! The rest of the team and I are going to keep working on the game until we get it done. Hooray!
